A Disaster of Unimaginable Proportions

On May 12th, 2008, a massive earthquake hit the Sichuan province in central China. The very next day, the death toll for this earthquake stood at 12,000 according to reports from the Chinese government. Today, nearly 70,000 are dead with over 365,000 injured (as of the end of May). More than 5 million people remain homeless today, and many more millions will see their lives changed forever.

Because of the rough terrain of the region, it is difficult to reach certain areas where rescue efforts are needed. The Red Cross Society of China noted its challenges in even approaching villages with the most destruction.

Despite the odds, the Chinese government and other aid groups have been quick to act. China's Health Ministry said that it had sent 10 emergency medical teams on the day of the disaster, and China's Chengdu Military Area Command dispatched 50,000 troops and armed police to help with disaster relief work in Wenchuan County. In many parts of the country, contingency plans have been implemented to save tens of thousands of lives and protect property.

Looking Beyond the Rubble

Even so, the damages are staggering and the need for help has never been greater. Losses in property alone will dramatically exceed USD $20 billion, and tens of thousands of children have been orphaned without any family remaining. Nearly a month after the disaster, world leaders have named the Sichuan earthquake one of the top 20 deadliest earthquakes of all time.

Like in past disasters, the international community has a moral imperative to help those in most need. Today, CirtexHosting stands with aid organizations around the world in encouraging our friends, family and colleges to generously support these disaster victims.
